Welcome to Insights in Nursing Episode 35
This week the podmedic does an interview segment from the NTI conference at Chicago joined by public health nurse consultant and co-host Anne Robinson, critical care nurse Anna Dermenchyan from UCLA Ronald Reagan Medical Center and part-time nurse educator at Mt. Saint Mary’s School of Nursing, and Dorrie Fontaine past AACN president and dean of University of Virginia in Charlottesville.
The Silent Treatment
A few months ago, the AACN had a press release on the findings of a study they conducted called The Silent Treatment: Why Safety Tools and Checklists Aren’t Enough to Save Lives. According to this study, majority of health care workers received safety tool warnings but failed to act upon it resulting to poor patient outcomes. Among the key findings of the study include concerns of nurses by colleagues who resorts to shortcuts and display of incompetence, disrespect of colleagues preventing them from heeding others’ professional opinion, and the lack of nurses voicing out their concerns about such incompetence and dangerous practices.
Healthy Work Environment Initiatives
In response to the Silent Treatment study’s findings, the AACN and AORN partnered with VitalSmarts, an innovator in evidence-based corporate training and organizational performance, on “The Silent Treatment” study to identify communication barriers that contribute to avoidable medical errors.
From identifying the communication barriers, the involved organizations are now working on initiatives and plans to help change the current culture in the workplace and convert it into a healthy work environment.
