Insights in Nursing Podcast Episode 19
“Something Borrowed, Something Blue . . .”
Data Scraping and Online Patient Privacy
The nurses on the panel this week talked about the privacy issues with online patient social media sites such as “PatientsLikeMe.com.” Terri Polick, and Jamie Davis were joined by Lorry Schoenly, RN, PhD from (CorrectionalNurse.net) and nurse and social media advisor, Rob Fraser (NurseRob.com).
Lorry shared the first topic with the team, an article from the AMedNews.com site about recent reported controversy surrounding the Nielsen Company’s data mining of patient data from PatientsLikeMe.com (and presumably other sites) in direct violation of that site’s terms of use. Rob Fraser, currently compiling a book on health care and social media had many interesting things to say and suggested that a standardized education for patients about how to be involved with social media was advisable.
Nurses Plan Patient’s Hospital Wedding
We couldn’t resist talking about the Maryland hospital that helped a critical care patient have their wedding in the facility. While this is certainly a special situation, nurses make arrangements to help their patients conduct their lives outside of the hospital all of the time! This is just part of the ways in which the holistic nature of nursing care helps the patient achieve wellness in many different ways.
